Stabilized Ballyard Materials
Ideal Mix for Low-Maintenance Ballyards
Take all of the great drainage characteristics of our Standard Infield Topdressing, pre-blend the material with an organic binder, and you get the best permeable infield mix, or baseball dirt, possible. Kafka’s Stabilized Infield Mix provides a firm, resilient playing surface with minimal mud or dust. It has excellent water bearing capacity and load bearing strength, retains flexibility and cushion, and reduces wind and water erosion. This results in near immediate play after rainfall, fewer cancellations, and less man-hours spent on maintenance and preparation. Recommended depth for new field construction is 3” over an appropriate base material.
When you install Kafka’s Stabilized Warning Track Mix, the result is a warning track that will continue to perform with even less maintenance, and the addition of the organic binder allows the material to retain moisture even longer.
How it works
Kafka’s Stabilized Infield Mix is crushed to ⅛″ minus with fines for better compaction and excellent drainage, then pre-blended with an organic binder to deliver the best permeable infield mix, or baseball dirt, possible. This material provides a firm, resilient playing surface with minimal mud or dust. It has excellent water bearing capacity and load bearing strength, retains flexibility and cushion, and reduces wind and water erosion. This results in near-immediate play after rainfall, fewer cancellations, and less man-hours spent on maintenance and preparation. Recommended depth of 3” for new field construction over an appropriate base material.
Kafka’s Stabilized Warning Track aggregates are crushed to ¼″ minus with fines, which helps it compact to provide a stable, safe warning track that will hold up to more traffic with less maintenance. The coarser material also allows players to feel the “crunch” under foot that warns them when the wall or fence is near.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kafka’s Stabilized Ballyard Mixes are crafted from decomposed granite instead of sand, clay, or silt, increasing permeability to reduce rainouts.
Our Stabilized Infield Mix and Stabilized Warning Track Mix are premium options of our Standard Ballyard Mixes. Our Standard Ballyard Mixes are pre-blended with an organic stabilizing binder, which creates the best permeable surface possible:
- Remains permeable
- Retains adequate moisture to reduce required maintenance
- Creates a firm and resilient playing surface
- Preserves flexibility and cushion
- Reduces water and wind erosion
- Prevents virtually all mud or dust from developing
Aside from the depth of installation for a new or existing field, the difference between the two ballyard mixes is slight. Because of the extra abuse a warning track endures due to maintenance vehicle traffic while receiving less maintenance when compared with the infield, our Stabilized Warning Track Mix is a coarser version of our Stabilized Infield Mix.
Coarser warning track mix also provides a more prominent “crunch” when stepped on. This crunch warns players that they’re nearing the wall or fence around the perimeter of the field.
The product is commonly shipped via bulk end-dump trucks and trailers, with an average truckload of material weighing approximately 23 tons — though the type of material and the size of the truck and trailer will cause this to fluctuate slightly. Less-than-truckload quantities are available in one ton increments, but may be subject to additional set-up fees due to small production runs.
If bulk truckload shipping is not an option, our Ballyard Mixes can be packaged in ~3,000-pound super sacks. These 1½-ton bags provide easy transportation via flatbed, van, or LTL common carriers, and also facilitate easier storage and handling on job sites.
When constructing a new field, Kafka Granite recommends a compacted depth of three inches over an appropriate base material. To calculate how much you may need, read our guide to estimating how much stabilized infield mix you may need. You’ll find recommendations for both grass and skinned infields at compacted depths of three and four inches.
